I am a decorator in Lenwade, near Norwich, and I run Matt’s Painting, Decorating & Tiling Services from here.
It is just me. I quote the job, I do the job, and I am the one who picks up the phone if you ring six months later because something needs a look at. That is deliberate, and it is why most of my work comes from people who have had me before or been told about me by a neighbour.
How I work
A house is not a building site. Sheets go down before anything else happens, furniture gets moved and covered rather than shoved into a corner, and the room is swept and wiped at the end of every day, not just at the end of the job.
I turn up when I say I will. If something holds me up — and occasionally something does — you will hear it from me the day before, not on the morning when nobody arrives.
Most of a decorating job is preparation. Anyone can put paint on a wall. Getting the wall ready is the part you are actually paying for.
Bigger jobs
One person, start to finish
Every job on this site was done by me, on my own. On something big — a full house repaint, or a bathroom taken back to the boards — that means it takes longer than it would with a squad on it. I will tell you at the quote how many days it honestly needs, rather than promise a week and take three.
What you get back for that is simple: the person who priced the work is the person doing it, every single day, and no part of your house gets handed to somebody you have never met.
Where I am
A decorator in Lenwade, working across mid Norfolk
Lenwade is a village just outside Norwich, and it is where I work out of. Nearly everything I take on is within a short drive of it, which matters more than it sounds: I can come and look at a room properly before I put a price on it, and I am close enough to call back afterwards if anything wants attention.
It also means I am not trying to cover the whole county. Norwich and mid Norfolk is what I can reach and get home from in a day, and I would rather do that properly than spend half the week in the van. If you are further out and the job is worth the trip, ring and ask.
Questions people ask
Do you charge for a quote?
No. I come and look, measure up and write it down, and there is no charge and no obligation either way.
Do I need to buy the paint?
Only if you want to. I can supply everything at trade price, or work with whatever you have already chosen.
Do you move furniture?
Yes, within reason. Anything very heavy or very precious is better moved out before I start, and I will say so when I quote.
Can you do the tiling and the painting?
That is most of my bathroom work. One person, one price, one date in the diary, and the two trades scheduled in the right order.
Do you tile roofs?
No. Wall and floor tiling inside the house only. For a roof you want a roofer.
How far do you travel?
Norwich and mid Norfolk as standard — being a decorator in Lenwade puts most of that inside a short drive. Further for a bigger job, see the areas covered, or just ask.
